Weekend Adventures - The Pumpkin Patch

This weekend the weather was perfect.  Cool and crisp in the morning, sunny and warm (but not hot) in the afternoon.

Tyler started antibiotics on Friday, for a minor infection from a cut on his big toe.  He's supposed to get 3mL, three times a day. and, being the ever diligent mother I am, I double checked the dosage several times to be sure I had it right.  Once confirmed, I poured it out for him.  He was so excited to have some medicine of his very own, that he dutifully drank the three spoonfuls I provided him, three times a day.  Just after I gave him his dose for Saturday morning, Hubby pointed out to me that the top of the spoon is 10 mL, and NOT 1.0 mL as I had read it!  Gulp. Gulp. Gulp.

I had just overdosed my baby on antibiotics!!!!!

I called the pediatrician's office, which usually has a nurse line where you can ask for help.  But the nurse line is closed on Saturdays. I frantically called back two or three times, hoping that maybe it just opened a bit later, but no dice.  Finally I hit option #1 to make an appointment.  I was pretty sure we didn't need to bring him in, but I wanted - needed - someone to talk me off the ledge to ask someone what I should do.  I lucked out and got an RN who happened to be working the appointment line that morning.  She cautioned me that she wouldn't be able to go into all the standard protocols that she would on a weekday, but agreed to hear what was going on.  I explained the situation, and after a pregnant pause, she replied, "I'm going to have to go ask a provider about this one."  Did I mention "gulp"?

She came back to explained that Tyler was going to be fine and didn't need to be seen.  We weren't to give him any more medicine that day, and resume the correct dose on Sunday.  She was very, very sweet, and commented that the doctor was mostly impressed that I'd been able to get Tyler to actually take that much of it.  But, like I said, he was happy to have some medicine of his very own.

So, knowing that I didn't need to have my baby's stomach pumped (but that we would have to load him up on yogurt and probiotics to minimize any other antibiotic 'side-effects') we headed out to the pumpkin patch we've been visiting every year since Connor was a baby.  It's about 45 minutes east of us, and a nice little place.  They have a corn maze and farm animals, hay rides and a barrel train.  Plus all the typical farm equipment, which is a little boy's heaven.  The owner of the farm also has his own pumpkin air cannon.  They supplied the pumpkins for the Colorado Punkin Chunkin contest, for which Hubby and his best friend have a trebuchet (that story should have been in the Weekend Adventures from a few weeks ago!)

The owner invited the guys to bring their machine out to the pumpkin patch and throw a few pumpkins for the crowd.  All went well until one misfired and went backwards. It's always a little scary to see a pumpkin go flying toward a crowd.  I'm not the religious sort, but I started praying in that moment that no one would get hurt.  Thankfully, no one was.  It missed the large building and all the people eating lunch outside of it.

Aside from that mishap, we had a really good time.  The boys spent a lot of time on the toy tractors that were scattered around the grounds.  There was a remote controlled car club there doing a tractor pull type of thing.  They hooked the tractor Connor was riding up to their sled, and had Connor pull it down their track.  He was so excited, and declared that the most fun he had that day.  Connor wore his Halloween costume, and was thrilled whenever anyone greeted him with a, "hello, Bumblebee!" (from Transformers).  The boys and I also got well and truly lost in the corn maze.  We did manage to find the middle, but we were all getting hot and tired after that, so we snuck out through one of the corn rows and called it a day.  Shhhh, don't tell anyone we cheated, OK?

  1. Great pictures! I love Connor's Bumblebee costume, just another reason that he and O need to get together sometime. :o)
