We had a fairly uneventful Labor Day weekend. If you'll recall, I had planned to run a marathon on Labor Day. It would have been my first. Unfortunately, I had a fall (the meet-the-pavement-quickly variety, not the hot-chocolate-and-hay-rides variety) while out for a scheduled 18-miler when we were in Boise. I was, thankfully, only about a mile from my MIL's house, and Hubby had insisted on joining me for such a long run in an unfamiliar town. MIL is a nurse, so she was able to help clean up the large bloody wound on my knee, and she had an ankle brace and ice pack handy for the sprained ankle.
It was the sprained ankle that ended my marathon training. It's been almost two months, and it's still not 100% better. I wasn't able to run on it for several weeks, and by the time that I could do some short, very easy jogs, it was too late to catch up on my training in time for the race. :-(
I'm bummed. But I didn't let it all go to waste. I had paid for the race after all, so on Sunday morning I herded the kids up, and we drove down to Colorado Springs to pick up my race packet. I figured I should at least go get my free tee-shirt and whatever swag they provided. Colorado Springs is about an hour-and-a-half drive from Denver. So as to not waste such a long drive, I took the kids to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo for the day as well.
I haven't been to the CMZ in about 10 years, so I didn't really know what to expect. But it was fun, and I was pleasantly surprised, and impressed that the kids were both able to walk the whole thing on their own. As the name of the place indicates, it's on the side of a mountain, so there were a lot of hills to climb. But the boys both did great.
The zoo is most famous for their large giraffe herd, as well as for fact that you can get up close to them all day.
Connor was excited to feed the giraffes their crackers
They were pretty eager to receive them
Tyler was a little nervous about it, so he just set his crackers on the fence and let the giraffes take them from there. LOL
One cool thing about the CMZ, is that there are play structures all over the zoo for the kids, as well as a big playground at about the halfway point.
And they have PONY RIDES!!!!!!!
Tyler seems to have a thing for tortoises. He watched this guy walk all the way across his pen, and stopped to talk to him before moving on to the next animal. Apparently they had a petting zoo at school one day over the summer, and Tyler spent his time in there following a tortoise around too. Cute kid.
And of course, it's not a trip to the zoo without ice cream.
Staredown.
